Bones

This lacquer painting is a piece I created over three months, blending modern art with traditional Chinese techniques.

Chinese lacquerware represents a significant ancient Chinese invention in chemical processing and art. In this work, I incorporated materials like mother-of-pearl inlay, eggshell, color lacquer, finely ground gold leaf, and raw lacquer.

I utilized the natural textures and properties of raw lacquer to enhance the intricacy of the works. The eggshells were crushed by hand, and I applied them to the composition using a small knife with raw lacquer as adhesive. Similarly, mother-of-pearl inlays were integrated using the same method. This traditional Chinese lacquer technique is highly meticulous and requires precise conditions of temperature, humidity, and environment to work with natural lacquer effectively. Each layer of lacquer must be air-dried in a shaded area before applying the next, as sunlight drying is unsuitable.
